Backup power supply for a private home Comment
The main difference between a private house and an ordinary apartment is its strong dependence on the supply of electrical energy. In case of malfunctions, almost all life support systems (light, water, ventilation, heating, etc.) are stopped. In addition, country houses use high-tech systems and equipment that are sensitive to the quality of the energy supplied.
There are two main problems when powering a country house from public power networks – low voltage quality and sudden power outages. This can lead to failure of expensive equipment. If during the winter the heating or water supply system is turned off, and even in the absence of the owners, the damage will be significant.
A home backup power supply system, consisting of additional sources of electrical energy, the functioning of which does not depend on the main network, will ensure comfortable living conditions in a private home.
Types of autonomous backup power supply sources
Generators
When choosing a generator, it is necessary to take into account the cost of the fuel on which it operates, as well as the availability of premises for its placement that meet the standards and rules for safe operation.
- Gasoline. The operating principle is based on the conversion of mechanical energy obtained by burning fuel into electrical energy. Advantages: availability of fuel, operation at sub-zero temperatures, moderate noise level, compact dimensions, no permission for use required. Disadvantages – high fuel consumption, a break in operation is necessary to prevent the engine from overheating, and the release of exhaust gases.
- Diesel. The operating principle is the same as that of gasoline generators. Advantages – performance does not depend on weather conditions, fuel consumption is less than that of gasoline engines, the operating period depends on the volume of the fuel tank and can reach 15 hours. Disadvantages include the presence of exhaust gases, in winter the fuel must be stored in a warm room, and complex and expensive maintenance is required.
- Gas. Electrical energy is generated from burning gas in an engine. Advantages – the ability to install both at home and outdoors, good operating time, release of fewer harmful substances in exhaust gases, minimal noise level, high efficiency. Disadvantages – to use liquefied gas, you need cylinders and a storage room; to use mains gas, you need to carry out proper ventilation and obtain permission to operate from the relevant authorities.
Uninterruptible power supplies
UPSs provide backup power using additional batteries. Uninterruptible power supplies also improve the quality of voltage, bringing it to standard values. Advantages: automatic switching on, environmental friendliness, voltage stabilization. The disadvantages include limited operating time, noise from the fan, placement is allowed only in separate, cool rooms.
Inverter power supplies
The inverter and UPS have a similar operating principle; rechargeable batteries are used for backup power. Advantages – automatic switch-on function, environmental friendliness, voltage stabilization, simple maintenance. Disadvantages – limited operating time and power, periodic replacement of batteries is required, placement is possible in warm rooms.
Solar power plants
This is a set of equipment designed to convert solar energy into electrical energy. Such power plants consist of solar panels, charge controllers, batteries and inverters. To summarize in simple terms, a solar power plant is an uninterruptible power supply equipped with solar panels. Advantages – the ability to receive free energy, energy generation even in cloudy weather, environmental friendliness, silent operation. Disadvantages – high cost, which, however, pays off within several years, after which the owner of the power plant receives energy for free and can even sell it at the “Green Tariff”.
Backup power supply systems
Backup power supply systems for private homes can be of the following types:
- single-stage – they include an inverter and a large-capacity battery, the power is enough for several hours,
- two-stage – consist of a UPS, batteries, generator. Gas, gasoline, diesel generator sets and solar power plants are used. Relevant during long power outages.
Installation of backup power supplies
Installation of backup power supply sources includes the following steps:
- inspection of the facility, carrying out calculations – determining power, measuring basic technical parameters,
- preparation of the project taking into account the wishes of the customer,
- installation and commissioning works,
- delivery of the finished system to the customer,
- warranty service.
Installing backup power supply systems for a private home requires special knowledge and experience. This work should be trusted only to professionals.
