Which heating radiators are best to choose?

When we renovate a room, we often think about replacing old radiators that have expired. It’s time to replace them with more modern and efficient equipment that is on the market.

But here the question arises – which radiators or radiators are better for you?

After all, some people praise aluminum radiators, others – steel ones.

Some neighbors are delighted with the new bimetallic radiators, others bought new cast iron ones and are also happy.

What are the principles for choosing radiators for an apartment?

Material from which radiators are made

There are several types of materials. Each of these materials has different properties:

  1. steel radiators
  2. aluminum radiators
  3. bimetallic radiators (aluminum and steel)
  4. cast iron radiators

The power in W depends on the surface area that this radiator will heat.

When deciding which radiators are best for an apartment, let’s not forget about their main function – to heat.

That is, it is preferable to choose a radiator for heating that will give off enough heat to your space.

That is why we recommend that you correctly calculate the area of the room to help our sales consultant.

If you have a low temperature heat source (such as a condensing boiler or heat pump), it is best to purchase a radiator with an additional 20% capacity reserve.

Don’t skimp on the size of the radiator, because if you get a larger radiator, you will be sure that you will not be cold, and in case it is too hot, you will be able to regulate its output using taps or a thermostat.

If the radiator is too small, all you have to do is replace it with a larger one.

Note that steel radiators come in different types:

  • type 22 (classic, with 2 convectors),
  • type 33 (radiator with 3 convectors),
  • type 21 (radiator with 1 convector).

It can be noted that there are aluminum and bimetallic radiators of different depths (77mm, 80mm, 90mm, 100mm) and each gives a different heating value.

Operating pressure and maximum pressure at which the radiator will operate.

The pressure declared by the manufacturer must exceed the pressure in the heating system.

Let’s take numbers as an example.

  • If we are talking about a centralized heating system (for example: Thermoelectric) In five-story buildings this parameter is not higher than 5 – 8 atmospheres. Modern multi-storey buildings are heated under pressure of up to 12 – 15 atmospheres. So you can simply install bimetallic radiators or cast iron radiators..
  • If we are talking about an autonomous heating system, then the maximum pressure will not exceed 3-4 atmospheres. This way you can install any radiator.

Radiator design.

Let’s not ignore the design of radiators – the idea of radiators that were everywhere in Soviet times is already gone.

Many people want radiators to harmoniously complement the decor of their rooms – today this is quite possible.

Build quality and painting.

At first glance, all radiators are the same.

But from our more than 24 years of experience, we can tell you that this is not the case.

  • The thickness of the metal may differ by several millimeters. Which leads to a reduction in service life.
  • The quality of painting varies. The best radiator manufacturers prepare the metal surface well before painting (grinding, degreasing, coating with an anti-corrosion compound) and use high-quality polymer paint (dries in an oven). High-quality painting ensures that the radiator will look like new for a long period of time. And over time, the outer surface will not rust or the paint will fall off.
  • Converter surface (part of the radiator that transfers heat to the air in the room). If the manufacturer skimped on the most important part of the radiator – the convector, then, despite its impressive size, the radiator will be ineffective, and you risk freezing in winter.

How to decide on the type of radiator

  1. With autonomous heating (which is a system independent from neighbors), you can install any radiators you wish. Due to the fact that the operating pressure in the system is low.
  2. With centralized heating (ThermoElectrica/Termocom), only cast iron or bimetallic radiators can be installed. Because the operating pressure in the system is much higher.

As it turns out, neither steel nor aluminum radiators can withstand the high pressure of central heating systems.

Thus, the choice between bimetallic and cast iron radiators depends on your budget, as well as the features of certain models.

However, here are some tips to give.

  1. In older houses with central heating, you can choose cast iron radiators or bimetallic radiators. Cast iron heats up very slowly, but it also retains heat for a long time. The appearance of cast iron radiators is considered by many to be outdated.
  2. If you live in a multi-storey building with central heating, where the pressure of the heating system is higher, then it is better to take bimetallic radiators. These radiators have a modern and pleasant look.
  3. If you have an autonomous heating system, we recommend installing steel panel radiators, aluminum or bimetallic radiators. Since these 3 types are much more economical and convenient, they look better and are much more convenient to use (heat up quickly). Cast iron radiators are rarely used in autonomous (autonomous) heating systems.

Useful tips for choosing heating radiators

  1. Recently, more and more heating systems are based on a condensing boiler (saves gas and gives a coolant temperature of up to 50 degrees Celsius); it is necessary to install larger radiators, i.e. with an additional 20% in power compared to systems where a conventional boiler is installed.
  2. Do not install radiators in the bathroom. It is much more convenient to install a heated towel rail.
  3. Choose steel radiators made in Turkey or Italy, give preference to Ukrainian ones. Ukrainian ones are lower in calories and worse in quality.
  4. Install quality supply and check valves. They will save you a lot of hassle, preventing possible leaks and flooding.
  5. Install a faucet with a thermostatic head to more easily control the room temperature.
  6. To protect your radiators and entire system from corrosion, add Sentinel X 100 inhibitor to the system. This way, you will increase the efficiency of your heating system by 15% and reduce gas consumption.
  7. If you are in the process of renovating your entire home and want maximum thermal comfort and a minimalist aesthetic, we recommend underfloor heating instead of radiators.

When choosing batteries for your apartment, you should be careful. A low price can cause cold in the room, and the service life of cheap radiators will not exceed 5-6 years. In the event of a central heating system failure, cheap batteries can quickly fail.
