How does air conditioning work in winter?

Most air conditioners produced today (inverter type only) are models that operate in heating mode in addition to cooling.
Leading manufacturers of climate control equipment have long been working on the problem of air conditioners operating in winter. Using an “all-weather version” of a household air conditioner that can completely replace your heating system offers many benefits.
Benefits of heating with air conditioning
- Installation can be carried out in any room that meets the minimum requirements. Therefore, there is no need to develop an expensive project and allocate a separate room, obtain permission (as in the case of a gas boiler) and install chimneys and hoods.
- For heating with air conditioning there is no need to install gas or bring firewood – the unit requires a household power supply (220 V). The main thing is to choose the right power cable for the power supply. Taking into account the ongoing work on the development of solar and wind energy, in the future – our own full or partial energy independence.
- Inverter air conditioner – this is the same heat pump. On days with temperatures of +5-10 degrees Celsius, you can get an efficiency factor of 4. That is, as in the case of heat pumps, you spend 1 kW of electricity and get 4 kW of thermal energy.
- If you decide to install an air conditioner, your home will look more minimalistic. You will just have a beautiful snow-white indoor unit on the wall, and you will not have brutal radiators on the wall + pipes at the base level.
- You can control your room temperature more effectively, since most air conditioners already have a built-in thermostat, with which you can program when and at what temperature the air conditioner should operate. Likewise, the Ariston KIOS BS R32 model has built-in internet connectivity so you can control everything remotely using your smartphone.
- Low inertia – the system begins to fully operate within a few seconds after activation. Air flow control allows for uniform heating of the room at all levels and throughout the entire volume. The heating air conditioner creates a uniform temperature field.
- Easy to use. Heating of the room using an air conditioner is carried out completely automatically – human intervention in this process is minimal. Programming modes allow for additional savings. For example, in the absence of residents, the system can maintain the minimum permissible temperature and, before their arrival, create the necessary temperature parameters in turbo mode.
- Easy to maintain. First, there is no need to hold the block. To operate the air conditioner in winter for heating, it is enough to carry out maintenance when changing seasons (spring and autumn), that is, when switching from heating to cooling and vice versa. However, these operations are mandatory for any air conditioner.
Completely explosion-proof and without the risk of poisoning from natural gas or carbon monoxide. If the installation of a winter air conditioner is done professionally, then this type of heating is the safest for both people and the room itself.

Let’s move on to the financial side of using an air conditioner.
A simple calculation shows that installing a winter air conditioner will cost several times less than installing a central heating system.
In addition, installing a domestic air conditioner greatly simplifies the designer’s work, eliminating the need to mask pipes and radiators. And this, of course, will reduce your budget allocated for renovation of the premises.
Most air conditioners on the market that combine heating and air conditioning functions can operate in the so-called reverse mode. The operating temperature range in them is expanded to -5°C, which means that you can turn on the air conditioner in winter.
However, the efficiency of such models, especially when passing the 0°C mark, begins to decline sharply – the oil thickens and there is a danger of condensate freezing.
For stable operation of such units, it may be necessary to install a set of winter air conditioners that expand the temperature range to -15°C. For this purpose, three additional devices are additionally built into the air conditioner:
- Moderator to reduce fan speed. Installing a moderator allows you to reduce the flow of water sent through the heat exchanger of the condenser-compressor unit, which leads to an increase in the productivity of the unit. The installed sensor, by increasing/decreasing the fan rotation speed, maintains the temperature at which freon condenses. This also helps to partially solve the problem of freezing of the external drive.
- Crankcase heater. The device heats the oil that accumulates in the crankcase, diluting it and bringing it to a consistency that provides effective lubrication.

Winter air conditioners are in increasing demand – more and more consumers appreciate the benefits of units that are four times more efficient than any heater. This trend ensures that the range of winter devices will expand rapidly in the near future.
And yes, for a longer life and for the comfort in the house, it is also important to know how to get rid of the unpleasant smell from the air conditioner if it appears.
